James Buchanan Cemetery
The James Buchanan Cemetery is located at Nashville East, Tennessee U.S. Geological Survey Quadrangle Map #311NW, on Elm Hill Pike at a point about 600 feet west of its intersection with McCrory Creek Road. It is on the original North Carolina Land Grant to Thomas Gillespie, a cousin of Archibald (1728-1806) and James Buchanan (1763-1841). The plot was reserved for a graveyard by deed when the Buchanan Heirs sold the property in 1867.
James Buchanan and wife, Lucinda East Buchanan, raised their sixteen (16) children in the Log House which is separated from the cemetery by Elm Hill Pike. This beautiful and historical Buchanan Cemetery was chosen by families of James and Lucinda, several of their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren to be the final resting place for their loved ones. As of today, 158 persons have been identified as being interred in this cemetery - many are in unmarked grave sites. 81 unmarked grave sites remain unidentified.
Many family members and friends have cared for the Buchanan Cemetery throughout the years. During his adult life for over 45 years, Mr. Malchiga Coffee (Pappy) Whitworth served as caretaker. Each year on the 4th of July and on Labor Day, Pappy, along with many family and friends would gather at the Buchanan Cemetery for a workday and picnic lunch. He was always available to take care of digging graves when one was required.
After Pappy’s death in 1987, the Whitworth Clan (who have many loved ones buried in the Buchanan Cemetery and are Buchanan descendants) met and elected Robert Dabbs Whitworth to oversee the care of this revered plot of ground.
